Frequently Asked Questions
What Supplies do you use?
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about the supplies that I use in my artwork.
- What kind of gel plate do you recommend?
I have used both Gelli Arts Plates and GelPress Plates. Both perform extremely well, are durable and reusable. I haven't tried to make my own gel plate but there are lot's of recipes on YouTube if you want to try making your own.
- What kind of paper do you use on the gel plate?
I use photocopy paper, old book pages, music note sheets, dressmaking pattern paper, wet strength tissue paper, teabag paper, deli paper, thin sketchbook paper (large sheets) and Seawhite of Brighton 170gsm A2 cartridge paper.
- What kind of paint do you use on the gel plate?
I use acrylic paint. The brands I prefer are student grade ones. Amsterdam, Daler Rowney Graduate Acrylic amd Pebeo Studio Acrylics. If you need paint that has a longer drying time I recommend Golden open Acrylics.
- How do you clean your gel plate and roller?
I use baby wipes, warm soapy water or if the marks on the plate are very stubborn baby oil removes marks. I usually soak my rollers in warm soapy water and allow to dry fully before using again on the gel plate.
- What paint and paper works best for image transfer?
I like Amsterdam Black or Prussian Blue. Pebeo studio acrylics Payne's Grey has also worked. Copy paper works well or old book pages for image transfer.
- What are your favourite paint pens?
I like posca pens, I use lots of different colours and thicknesses. White, Fine 0.7 is my most used size. I like Signo Uni-Ball Gel pens to add gold or bronze details.
- What kind of glue do you use for collage?
I mainly use Windsor & Newton Galeria Mat Medium. I also like Nori Paste and Yes Paste to glue heavier papers. Liquitex Heavy Gloss Gel Medium works well for gluing paper to cradleboard.
